Biography:
Sophianne Girard is a young jazz vocalist and composer from Montreal. She’s been singing her soul out since she was a child. She performed in a choir, then in a musical theater troupe and, eventually, specialized as a soloist and composer during her studies in CEGEP* Marie-Victorin and at McGill University in the jazz program. She also teaches voice lessons. Her first album For Some Reason was released online on September 30th 2022 and, in concert, on October 4th. This summer, she performed at the FestiJazz of Mont-Tremblant, in the Relève section, and at the T.U.JazzFest of Toronto. She is one of the three finalists of the John Lennon Signwriting Contest (worldwide composition contest), with her song For Some Reason, in the jazz category. Also, she released, on January 20th 2023, her EP Live at Opus Studios.
Discoveries, research, and acceptance of her musical self are at the center of her first album. She finally feels free to be able to make her music the way she always wanted to. Sophianne took some time to explore different styles. Her influences include jazz and Latin standards, modal and pop music. Sophianne’s compositions can be described as fresh and soft and sometimes festive. Each rejoins a part of herself and her personality. Some texts are denouncing, some are fiction, and others are closer to her own life experience, letting herself wonder and wander, and be enchanted by words, colours, and even festive sounds. ‘’I’m blossoming and learning a little more everyday thanks to this amazing project and the fabulous musicians that are a part of it.’’ -Sophianne G.
Sophianne’s bright and clear voice has a ‘’je ne sais quoi’’ that will leave you wanting more!

Career Goals | Objectives:
My main objective is to do music and have fun. I want to connect with other musicians and with my audience. The most important thing for me is that artists help each other out and that we empower ourselves through the process (of creating, playing, bonding, etc.)
Music Education | Training | Qualifications:
I studied at McGill University in the jazz program, but before that, I studied at Cégep Marie-Victorin in jazz voice. (Cegep is a step before university in Quebec (after High School).. Quebec school system's a little different than anywhere else.)
Musical Instruments | Studio Equipment:
Keyboard, I rarely use my mic while composing. I just do it acoustic (voice and piano). I use Sibelius to write my music, but I like to handwrite some rhythms, lines and chords before creating a real leadsheet and/or score.
Influences | Sounds Like:
Maria Schneider, probably because of my use of the ionian sound and the floating kind of airy vibe it has, but I feel like it's hard to say my music really sound like someone else's... Some tunes of Snazzback with China Bowls might have a similar sound (ideawise, linewise). Still, they really have grooves going on and it is a thing I'll try to incorporate into my music more, but it's not something that's really representing it now.
Live Performance History | Residencies | Touring Experience:
I do! Mostly in Montreal, but also in the province of Quebec. I played at the T.U.JazzFest in Toronto last September.
