Biography:

Klevershirts the Isle of Man’s top original band from the late 1980’s are back and are rolling back the years.1986 is a long time ago, and a lot has changed since then….The Isle of Man was still considered a tourist destination (but only just), with its pubs, clubs and bars along Douglas seafront bustling with visitors (and locals alike) every night from June to September. 1986 was also the year that klevershirts formed. Five lads in their teens and early twenties began rehearsing at the long-gone now converted -to-apartments Douglas Head Hotel concert room; with one clear objective. To be an original band, writing and playing their own music – with absolutely no cover versions. The band quickly gained prominence on the manx music scene, and as lead singer Paul Sellors recalls….“we got tight by playing 7 or 8 gigs a month and rehearsing and writing in every spare minute we had”. The dedication paid off and after recording two demos at Linden Sounds in Shap, Cumbria, several record labels began to show interest in the band and wanted to hear more. Sadly, though, stardom wasn’t to be. The wanderlust of youth got the better of lead singer Paul Sellors who decided to quit the band for the promise of a balmy summer grape picking in France; only to make a low-key return to the Island a few weeks later after arriving in France to find it wasn’t the grape picking season! Although Paul had returned the klevershirts ‘spark’ had gone and the band went their separate ways. The years passed, and in 2012 Bassist Robbie Sampson suggested a reunion and the band got together for their first rehearsal in over 20 years. Unfortunately, it only lasted one or two rehearsals. It was, in guitarist Lee Harrison’s words; “a romantic false start”. “We reminisced about the good old days, and I think we thought we would just slot back into the groove when rehearsals came round. I hadn’t picked up a guitar for years and so it really was like learning to play all over again….and on top of that there was the challenge of trying to remember our songs and all of their specific parts………never mind trying to then play in a band environment……needless to say, it didn’t last long…” Fast forward to late 2019, and once again Robbie Sampson tries to set the reunion wheels in motion after what was then, a decades long hiatus….As Robbie says….”I got talking to a well-known Isle of Man music producer one day who told me that he had found a recording of klevershirts at the Central Hotel in 1986 and couldn’t believe how good the band sounded. I managed to get CD copies of the gig, and set about asking the rest of the guys if they fancied getting the band back together, as there was definitely, in my mind at least, unfinished business for kleverhsirts to reach their full potential….” All founder members bar one (Selwyn Collister) were in favour of giving it one more try, and rehearsals got underway in December 2019. The pandemic obviously put things on hold, but the band persevered, remembered how to play again! and eventually returned with their comeback gig at the Railway in Douglas on 19 February 2021; and things haven’t stopped there, infact they have gone from strength to strength! A change in personnel has seen drummer Jonny Peacock taking over from founder member Mark Green and then….a staggering 35 years since they originally formed, klevershirts released their first single “Boulder”, on 19 February this year.Klevershirts new single “Boulder” is a high energy pop/rock track, where jangly guitars, driving bass and laser focused drumming serve as the perfect vehicle for lead singer Paul Sellors’ hearty, passionate vocal performance that’s further augmented by soulful female backing vocals. Rock and pop audiences will surely find a lot to like about “Boulder”, thanks to its splendid post-punk fervour, clever lyrics, and melodic sensibility, that references the myth of Sisyphus as a metaphor for our persistent struggle in the face of adversity with the underlying message; it’s a call and response to say…we are all in this together and sometimes its ok to let it roll……. klevershirts trip back into the recording studio for the fist time since 1987 has spawned 8 further tracks that will be released during 2022 and 2023.
