Biography:
The Backsteps are a rock band from Canada whose members have been active in their local music scenes since 2015. Seth Hunt (guitar and vocals) and Devin Pierce (drums) started the first iteration of the band in 2015 under the name Mudd and quickly started writing original songs and playing shows in their hometown of Kingston. In 2017 they changed their name to Figure 8 and in 2018 they picked up a new member, Luke Garrison (bass and vocals). After another few months of making demos and playing shows, the band had the chance to record some singles with a local producer. The singles gained them streams from all over the world and made their way into rotation on local radio stations. By the end of 2019 the band was building a bigger fanbase and playing more shows across Ontario. They added their final edition to the lineup, Josh McEvoy (guitar), finalized their name as The Backsteps and decided that making music a career was going to be the long term goal of the band. The Backsteps had the chance to play two shows at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, sharing the stage with bands that have previously played there like Green Day and The Rolling Stones. Before the COVID-19 pandemic caused show postponements, The Backsteps had a headlining show at the Horseshoe Tavern lined up as well as headlining spots at local outdoor music festivals. In early 2020, The Backsteps stepped into the studio to record their debut album "Oh Yeah" which was released in July of the same year. Like the previous singles that had come out before, Oh Yeah gained 10s of thousands of streams worldwide which gained the band interest from Canadian talent management companies. Currently the band is playing as many shows as they can under current circumstances to promote their debut album and has plans to work on recording new demos in the fall.
Career Goals | Objectives:
Our main goal with the band is to write songs that people will love to listen to, play as many shows as we can building a fanbase all over the continent and eventually all over the world, and build connections and create new contacts in the industry to gain as much experience as possible. Our long term goal is to make sure our band will be our main source of income and we want our band to have a long and fruitful career.
Music Education | Training | Qualifications:
Our drummer studied music production at St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Canada and our bass player has an undergrad degree in music from Queen's University in Kingston, Canada.
Musical Instruments | Studio Equipment:
Currently we mostly use Fender amps. For live shows we play a Fender guitar and bass, a Gretsch guitar, and Ludwig drums. We used a Focusrite Scarlett series interface to record our debut album with Logic Pro as the DAW. We love Fender instruments, Vox amps, Shure microphones and any other music equipment that is fun to play with!
Influences | Sounds Like:
Our biggest influences would be Green Day, The Beatles, and The Strokes. We love various artists from all different genres of music like Guns n' Roses, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, and MGMT. Production-wise we take a lot of influence from rock music producers like Butch Vig, Steve Albini, and Mike Clink. We also like the production stylings of some alternative producers like Dave Fridmann and Rick Rubin.
Live Performance History | Residencies | Touring Experience:
We perform live regularly and in the last 12 months we've played close to 20 shows although we were not able to play shows as often as we usually do in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
