Biography:
COPUS is a poetic jazz band based in San Francisco. The ensemble was nominated for ‘best jazz song’ by the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, was honored with ‘best spoken word’ by the Clouzine International Music Awards, and has been on the GRAMMY ballot three times in the ‘best jazz album’, ‘best rap song’, and 'record of the year' categories. Most recently, COPUS presented world premieres of their acclaimed composition entitled “What if We?” at the World Bank and Forest Trends in Washington DC. Working in collaboration with Climate Music Project to bring climate crisis awareness to the populace through music and science, the work was well received and documented in an article in the New York Times. Formed by renowned poet Royal Kent and ASCAP Award-winning composer Wendy Loomis, COPUS presents conscious lyrics intertwined with beautiful melodies and powerful rhythms. COPUS – an acronym for Creation Of Peace Under Stars – has a faithful following by discerning listeners. In addition to Kent and Loomis, the current instrumentation includes bassist Patrick Mahon, drummer Levon Washington, and an array of special guest artists. COPUS has performed their poetic jazz style at festivals, jazz clubs, art galleries, and private events throughout the United States including the prestigious San Francisco Jazz Center, legendary The Bitter End and Feinstein’s 54 Below in New York, and the Cutting Edge Festival in New Orleans. "Through ace musicianship and a wild, bright & bold sound, COPUS captures the magic they’re seeking to create on “We All Bleed Red” – it’s like a combination of Quincy Jones meets Baz Luhrmann…theatrical & dramatic in nature with great storytelling, set in an old-school setting that incorporates modern-day movement in the structure and reflecting on the current state of the world lyrically.”
