Biography:
Born on the island of Oahu and transported to the Deep South of Main Land USA, I grew up in a small town 2 hours from Charlotte NC and Atlanta GA. People ask how long I’ve been on the mainland and I always say “long enough to get this southern accent.” Anyways… When I was 3 or 4 I was sitting on the kitchen floor of my aunts house trying to write the music for twinkle twinkle little star. My dad saw the music staff I had drawn on my paper with notes placed in their respective ""areas"", based on highs and lows of the nursery rhyme, and couldn't believe his eyes. Obviously, I didn't know exactly what I was doing, but I understood, just a little, how the process worked. Ever since then I have displayed a deep interest and love for singing and music. I was always trying to copy Brittany Spears and Avril Lavigne and my family always wanted me to sing at events and in church. Of course, when people asked what I was going to be when I grow up, I always said ""I want to be a rockstar. I have always had a good singing voice and a knack for rhyming beyond my years (not to toot my own horn, but toot*) but when I was 10 my step mother asked me that same question and I answered the same way...""I want to be a rockstar"".... but this time the answer wasn't met with adoration and smiles. No laughter, only her somber voice replying ""it's time to start being realistic, Morgan."" This shook my confidence so much that I didn't even want to sing in the shower anymore. I then turned to my other gift and hobby; visual art. I love to draw and paint and create but somehow it never felt quite right. I excelled in my college courses, majoring in Graphic Design, but I couldn't seem to find a home in it. Years go by, job search after job search, interview after interview; all were fruitless. So I moved from retail work to plant jobs, feeling miserable and lost…until…the summer of 2021. While visiting my family in the mid west my grandma turned to me and asked me “So what are your ambitions?” Which is basically the grown-up way of saying “What do you want to be when you grow up?” And I said “I’m going to school for Graphic Design, Gramma.” And she looked at me kind of disappointingly, saying, “aww well I wish you would do something with music”. At first when she said this it made me mad, because I had put so much time and effort into my degree but every day her words were in the back of my mind. So I decided it was time to take a hiatus from the job search and turn my attention towards my true passion. I said to myself “ I’ll give it a year “ and “whatever happens, happens.” In February 2022, I started an Instagram page under my Hawaiian name, Mokana Leilani and took on the persona of Flokana the Island Girl and I haven’t looked back. Holomua is a Hawaiian expression that means move forward despite your challenges. I take that I take to heart and I fully believe that you cannot fail if you don’t stop trying and that is exactly what I intend to do.
